Software Engineer Internship – AI Platform Team

About the role

Wellmark 2027 Summer Internship, starting May 2027; hybrid schedule at headquarters in Des Moines, IA. The AI Platform, Enterprise AI Services, and Data Engineering teams build data pipelines, APIs, microservices, AI platform capabilities, LLM agents, and reusable AI services. Qualifications: current junior, senior, or master's student in CS or related field; programming experience in Python/SQL/JavaScript/Java/.NET/C++; foundational knowledge of databases, APIs, pipelines, cloud, or ML. Wellmark is not considering candidates who require sponsorship now or in the future.

Requirements

• Current junior, senior, or master's student pursuing CS, Computer Engineering, MIS, Data Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or related degree
• Foundational software/data/cloud knowledge with interest in AI, data engineering, platform engineering, or related disciplines
• Experience through coursework, projects, internships, research, or personal learning with at least one programming or query language
• Basic understanding of databases, data structures, APIs, data pipelines, cloud services, or ML concepts
• At this time, Wellmark is not considering applicants requiring immigration sponsorship now or in the future

What you'll do

• Build data ingestion and transformation pipelines
• Develop APIs, microservices, serverless components, or event-driven workflows
• Support AI platform capabilities and generative AI/LLM agents
• Build reusable AI services, domain assistants, agents, prompts, tools, knowledge integrations, or workflows
• Create automated tests, troubleshoot issues, improve reliability and performance
• Use infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD for cloud deployments
