Skills

Skills are the tasks the agent knows how to do: search a board, apply to a job, read your inbox, write a proposal. The Pilot picks which one to run and when. This page covers what each button does and how to run a skill yourself.

What each button does

Each button asks the Pilot for that work. The request shows in the thread and runs next, with autopilot on or off. It works from your phone too; the agent on your computer picks it up.

ButtonWhat the agent does
Pipeline → Apply nowApplies to the job.
Pipeline → RetryTries a failed application again.
Pipeline → RescanScores a skipped job again, in case it was skipped by mistake.
Inbox → Scan pendingSorts new email, matches it to applications, and suggests status changes.
Networking → Find contactsFinds recruiters or hiring managers and drafts a message to each.
Networking → RewriteWrites a new version of the selected drafts.
Resumes → Extract from PDFReads a PDF into the resume editor.
Resumes → Tailor for jobMakes a copy of your resume for one job.
Pipeline → Draft proposalDrafts an Upwork proposal for the job.
Upwork → Submit on UpworkSends a proposal after showing you the Connects cost.
Upwork → Generate suggestionsSuggests a better profile title, overview, and skills.
Upwork → SyncBrings in invitations, offers, messages, and your Connects balance.

Add job links, on the Pipeline page or in the Pilot's message box, adds jobs to your pipeline right away. With autopilot on, the Pilot then scores them and applies to good fits.

Uploading a resume reads it straight away. Uploading a new PDF onto an existing resume doesn't, so use Extract from PDF (or Re-extract from PDF) for that.

Running a skill yourself

Type a skill in the terminal in the agent drawer. In Claude Code, skills start with /jobpilot:; in Codex, with $.

/jobpilot:search ML engineer new grad Pittsburgh --board linkedin.com
/jobpilot:apply https://boards.greenhouse.io/acme/jobs/42
/jobpilot:scan-inbox
SkillWhat it does
searchSearches a board, or the open web with --anywhere, and scores each job. Results go to To review under Started in terminal. The Pilot won't apply to them on its own.
auto-applySearches, then applies to each new job above your minimum score until it runs out or hits --max-apps. auto-apply approved applies to jobs you approved; auto-apply retry-failed retries failed ones.
applyChecks the fit of one job link or pasted posting, then applies.
networkingFinds the hiring contact for a role and drafts a message.
rescan-skippedScores skipped jobs again.
scan-inboxSorts new email and suggests status changes.
upwork-searchSearches Upwork, drops low-quality clients, and ranks the rest.

auto-apply and apply use your minimum score from the Pilot's rules. They answer "When can you start?" with your saved start date, or "2 weeks notice" if you haven't saved one.

While you type in the terminal, the Pilot holds new work for 3 minutes. Hand back in the thread ends the wait early.

The agent uses these skills during other work; you don't start them:

  • tailor-resume picks or makes the right resume for each application.
  • cover-letter writes a cover letter when a form asks for one.
  • get-code reads sign-in codes from your email.
  • solve-captcha handles captchas.
  • interview drafts interview replies and writes prep notes.
  • review-resume suggests a rewrite after you upload a resume.
  • humanizer edits generated text so it reads like a person wrote it.

Searching the open web

search --anywhere and the Pilot's research look past your boards: university and institute portals, lab pages, niche job sites. It works with no boards set up. Each posting is read, scored, and added to your pipeline. The run also names sites worth adding as boards. It never logs in or signs up.

Application statuses

An application is applied, screening, interviewing, offer, rejected, or withdrawn. The Applied tab in your pipeline counts each stage. Each application has its own page with its history, and Analytics charts the funnel over time.

Handling replies

With email connected and autopilot on, the Pilot reads new mail on its own. You can also press Sync on the Inbox page, then Scan pending. The agent works out what each message is (interview, rejection, offer, and so on) and which application it belongs to, then suggests a status change. Nothing changes until you approve it.

Upwork

Upwork connects through Upwork's own connector, so you don't store a password. Run /mcp in the terminal, choose upwork, and sign in. The Upwork page appears in the rail once you use it.

  • upwork-search checks each client's payment verification, spend, hire count, and how many proposals the job has, then saves the best jobs to your pipeline.
  • upwork-proposal writes a short proposal for you to review.
  • upwork-submit shows the Connects cost and your balance, and waits for you to confirm.
  • upwork-profile suggests a title, overview, and skills, and saves them when you approve. It also suggests portfolio and rate changes, which you copy over yourself.
  • upwork-sync brings in invitations, offers, and unread messages.

Nothing is sent to Upwork without your approval.

Next: Email setup.
